Book Review: Spectacular Things by Beck Dorey-Stein

From the moment I heard about Spectacular Things, I knew it was going to tug at my heartstrings. Beck Dorey-Stein’s name floated into my reading sphere like a breath of fresh air, enticing me with promises of sisterly bonds, ambition, and vivid portrayals of family dynamics. As someone who cherishes the complexities of relationships, I couldn’t resist diving into this beautifully woven tale.

At its core, Spectacular Things is an exploration of the Lowe sisters, Mia and Cricket, whose lives are painted against the backdrop of a cozy Maine town. These gifted daughters of a young single mother soon find themselves navigating the intricate waters of familial duty and personal ambition. Mia is the responsible caretaker, while Cricket embodies unyielding energy and a passion for soccer, destined for greatness—or so it seems. This dichotomy sets the stage for a heartwarming yet tumultuous journey filled with sacrifices, secrets, and the inevitable choices that come with pursuing dreams.

What I loved most about this book was how it balanced the tender moments between the sisters with the harsh realities they face. Mia’s nurturing nature resonated with me deeply; I found myself reflecting on the sacrifices we often make for family. Conversely, Cricket’s relentless pursuit of soccer stardom was the book’s pulse—while I personally didn’t relate to the soccer-centric dialogues, I appreciated how Dorey-Stein unveiled the pressures and privileges that come with striving for excellence in sports. This didn’t detract from my reading experience; instead, it added layers to the story, showcasing the authenticity of family dynamics.

The character development is tailored with finesse. The bond between the sisters and their mother, Liz, is beautifully depicted, evoking warmth and relatability. However, I did find myself occasionally overwhelmed by the soccer-centric dialogues—which definitely might be a personal hang-up! It felt like a lot to digest at times and diverted my attention. Still, Beck Dorey-Stein’s writing style is gripping and fluid, expertly leading the reader through each chapter, even if some moments felt a tad prolonged.

Moments of reflection are scattered throughout the narrative, with quotes that remind us of the weight of loyalty and the struggle for dreams: “When does loyalty become self-sabotage?” This poignant question lingered with me long after reading, prompting a deep ponder about ambition at what cost.

Despite some pacing issues, the book remained captivating, invoking laughter, tears, and thoughtful contemplation. Overall, I’d rate Spectacular Things four stars for its powerful depiction of sisterhood and the relentless pursuit of passion. If you’re someone who enjoys nuanced family dramas, sports narratives, and the depths of personal ambition—even if it comes with a side of sapphic romance—then this book will surely speak to your heart.

In conclusion, I extend my gratitude to The Dial Press for providing me this opportunity via NetGalley. If you’re ready to reflect on life’s many regrets and triumphs alongside a tender portrayal of sisterhood, Spectacular Things just might be the next book to captivate you. Happy reading! 💫
