Review of Maine Characters by Hannah Orenstein: A Journey Through Sisterhood and Self-Discovery

As the warm memories of my own trip to Maine last summer swirl in my mind, I couldn’t resist picking up Maine Characters by Hannah Orenstein. The idyllic lake views and the cozy cabin vibes were still fresh, and this novel promised a dive into the very essence of what I loved about my own vacation—family, connection, and the bittersweet nature of life’s transitions. What I found is a poignant exploration of sisterhood and the remnants of a father’s secrets, all set against the stunning backdrop of Maine.

The story opens with sisters Vivian Levy and Lucy Webster set to confront the legacy of their estranged father. Vivian, a successful sommelier in bustling New York City, arrives at the lake house to fulfill a bittersweet duty: to spread her father’s ashes and sell the family cabin she has never known. Contrastingly, Lucy, who grew up in Maine, is dealing with her own troubled marriage, making their meeting all the more layered and complex. It could have been a simple tale of grief and family reunion, but Orenstein weaves in rich themes of self-exploration, romance, and parental issues, making it a tapestry of emotion and depth.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its strong, relatable characters. Vivian and Lucy are beautifully crafted—each harboring their own fears and desires while learning about one another. The dual perspective allows us to delve into their thoughts and feelings, making their journey all the more impactful. While I was initially drawn in by the idea of a summer romance, I found myself enchanted by the depth of their sisterly bond as they navigate the complexities of who they are and what it means to be part of a family.

Orenstein’s writing style is both engaging and emotionally resonant. The pacing has its slow moments, which allowed me to savor the unfolding secrets about their father, but occasionally I wished for a faster cadence as the stakes rose at the cabin. Nevertheless, the book kept me turning pages, eager to uncover more about not only the sisters’ journey but also the characters that intersect with their lives. Each side character—from the well-meaning mothers to past loves—enriches the narrative, adding layers that make the story feel all the more robust.

There are moments that will stick with me long after closing the book, particularly the way Orenstein captures the suffocating nature of loss and the exhilarating possibility of new beginnings. It’s quite a feat to balance those stark realities while still exuding warmth and hope. While I anticipated a more romantic undercurrent, this exploration of familial ties and the simultaneous grief and joy of discovering a sibling was refreshing and heartfelt.

And though it feels indulgent to round down my rating to 4 stars from 4.75, I find myself wishing for a stronger pacing and perhaps an unexpected twist—something to propel the narrative even further into the realm of the unforgettable.

If you’re drawn to women’s fiction rich with emotional weight, familial dynamics, and the beauty of self-discovery, Maine Characters truly shines. It’s a perfect companion for a summer day by the lake—or for those of us indoors, dreaming of the coast. Whether you’re a fan of sisterly sagas or simply looking for a well-crafted narrative that invites reflection, this book by Hannah Orenstein is one to look forward to. Mark your calendars for May 13th, 2025, and prepare for a reading experience that promises to be both moving and memorable.
